Some Sweden Democrats think the only true Swedes are those who can trace back their ancestry to the dawn of time. It's an extreme idea that collapses under its own contradictions, argues The Local's James Savage.

Extreme rightwing ideology is born of insecurity and is inherently contradictory.... Hitler was a short, stocky dark-haired man who defined the German Master Race as tall, athletic, blond-haired and blue-eyed. He also allied himself with the Japanese.... calling them "honorary aryans".... the fact that the word "aryan" is of Indo-Iranian origin was also lost on him. Jomshof (and ALL his low-life ilk) is cut from exactly the same cloth as Adolf. Åkesson believes the same nonsense but is too shrewd an operator to wear his heart or soul on his sleave. And anyone thinking the Old Norse people were somehow homogeneously "Viking" in Hollywood type image should read The Children of Elm and Ash by historian Neil Price.... the Nordic Iron Age was as, or even more, varied in skin colour and culture than today's. But facts have never bothered the rightwing.
