Sweden increases refugee forecast again

Sweden's Migration Board (Migrationsverket) has increased its forecast to 31,000 for the number of people expected to seek asylum this year. It has also requested an additional 60 million kronor ($7.86 million) in 2010 to cope with the increased pressure.

"There has been a sharp upward revision. This is the second time this year we have increased the projection," said Dan Eliasson, the director general of the Migration Board.

Previously, the Migration Board estimated that there would be 25,000 asylum seekers in 2010, but in February, it increased its forecast to 28,000 and asked for an additional 50 million kronor for its budget. It has also increased its projection for next year by 1,000 to 28,000.

The spike in asylum seekers is largely because more people from Serbia and Kosovo are seeking refugee status following the abolition of visa requirements.

"Many European countries have been surprised by so many now coming from Serbia," said Eliasson. "Among others, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland have noticed a similar development."

However, the likelihood of people from the Balkans being allowed to staying in Sweden is "extremely" small.

"Each case must of course be assessed individually, but generally, it is very difficult to get asylum in Sweden from another European country," said Eliasson. "Often, the living conditions are very difficult. Many live in extreme poverty. However, Swedish asylum law provides no protection because of poverty and destitution, only to those who are threatened or persecuted."

The agency now expects that the government will inject extra money as required. If the Migration Board does not receive additional resources, the likely consequence would be longer processing times and increased caseloads. This would result in longer stays for asylum seekers in Sweden, which would mean a substantially increased burden on the government's budget, according to the estimates.

The agency also pointed out the need for 1,400 new apartments for asylum seekers. In response to the surge, the Migration Board has addressed the need for an increase in resources both for this year and next.

With regard to cases relating to work, visit and residence, the forecast for the number of applications is unchanged, with the exception of the guest student category.

In light of the decision to introduce tuition fees at Swedish universities and colleges for foreigners by Sweden's parliament, the Riksdag, the Migration Board estimates that the number of asylum applications will fall by 30 to 40 percent starting in 2011.

Where the hell are they supposed to put all of these new people? That is way too much.

Unemployment is so low ( all current Swedish citizens have plenty of jobs right ) and the Swedish economy doing so well i guess there is no reason not to bring in more people who need jobs and support ..
19:49 May 6, 2010 by karex
Helping others is good. Taking a disproportionate responsibility of a burden which should be shared by many is not.

It's unfair the way that residence seekers are treated here. There are those who come from cultures which have similar beliefs and share similar values. But since they are not from war-torn countries, are put through the ringer when it comes to applying for residence.

This same scruitiny and filtering process does not apply to others seeking "asylum". Then we wonder why crime rates soar sometimes...

From my experience Migrationsverket is full of idiots. It is real enemy of Sweden. They allow to stay in Sweden for years but they dont allow to work and pay tax. Only demand money for self.
20:21 May 6, 2010 by Jannik
Sweden is headed for the gutter.

The "do-gooder" mentality when it comes to immigration and asylum, will be the countries downfall, if the policies arent changed soon.

Sweden has in the last couple of years received a record number of asylum seekers, and nobody is wondering why the asylum seekers are headed towards the cosy swedish welfare state?

Sweden has become a magnet for leeches, when all other european countries have started tightening their policies.

But with politicians hellbent on turning this country into a multicultural cesspool, and the electorate obeying like timid sheep, this situation will soon spiral out of control.

Could we have the names and political affiliations of the poiticians who make these decisions?
20:46 May 6, 2010 by GefleFrequentFlyer
While I do understand it, it still boggles my mind how Sweden thinks it's thier duty to offer asylum to anyone claiming hardship. Don't they know they are only wasting away thier country, and no doing anything to help the asylum seekers, or to improve thier home country so they will stay?

It's kinda like chritian "missions" to 3rd world areas in a way. They think they are helping the situtation, but instead, they are only making the problem worse.

Sweden wants to play mother to the world and at the same time certainly seems intent on increasing its social problems.

Its also interesting that Denmark and Norway are decreasing refugee numbers at the same time that Sweden is increasing.

Sweden must have some of the dumbest politicians in the world...

I'm for immigration and as a Californian, I stand by the benefits of diversity. When I first arrived in Sweden, I was so very thankful for Migrationsverket - they were helpful, considerate, and I could not believe the ease of the immigration process.

Fast forward a few months later: I can not believe the lack of integration in the Swedish system! Most immigrants want to work and be positive members of society, yet it's virtually impossible to find work and integrate into society. What's leftover are disgruntled people that can't find work and stuck at SFI.

Migrationsverket should match the amount of money put into immigration with integration and create jobs for immigrants and help them create businesses, and in turn, creating more jobs. But instead of doing that, they add more people that will fall in line with everyone else not being able to find work.

Before helping others, why not help those already in the country, everyone will be all the more happier - immigrants included!

@Sweetdishgurl....good to know where you come from.you should have shown the example first.what is good for the goose should be good for the gander.

Sweden is just taking responsibility of its actions. check and find out Sweden sells in arms and weapons to warring nations. when the people are rendered homeless (refugees) by the war...of which arms were sold by Sweden...its but normal that sweden takes care of these refugees. we need more tram and bus drivers,,,hahaha

Sweden, really is suffering from a strange affliction, I guess the only way to describe it is a deathwish, it's just inexplicable.

@sweetdishgurl:ur a really dish gal!after getting the life u wanted u start bla bla!!and the swedish immigration is so .....they allow useless immigrants and even leave those who have jobs n paying taxes for stupid reasons!!!hhhm anyway lets c after 10years!!lycka till sweden...

Bad news for Sweden. Creation of a permanent underclass supported by the middle class. That also means 31000 fewer jobs for you know who.. But, the new upperclass Union Heads and career Political Leaders no problem they will never know..
01:44 May 7, 2010 by Greg in Canada
I just did some research - Canada has reduced the number of refugees this year down to 19,600 for 2010 and we have more than three times the population as does Sweden. If we followed Sweden's example we would be bringing in about 100,000 refugees. There is no way we could or would ever be willing to handle this many.

The math just doesn't make sense. How can Sweden continue to bring in this many refugees and not expect serious societal consequences. Why are the Swedes so hell bent on dramatically changing the ethnic/racial composition of their formerly peaceful homogeneous society?
03:59 May 7, 2010 by Davey-jo
I suggest you direct them to Arjeplog. That should put off all but the most hardy.
04:53 May 7, 2010 by Security
Just relax and be cool. Let those people live their life and bring their culture, and embrace the change. Thats the only way. If people fight it just makes the whole country miserable. I dont have a rational reason to like more Swedish person than Somalian person. I find them both interesting and strange to me in its own way. But who cares, i want Sweden to change to become less cold, to become a melting pot, mad for living, full of life, thats the only way to make it better.
07:16 May 7, 2010 by boby
Lol! Dan Eliasson wants more imployees? He just fired one a few months ago for supporting Israel. I guess he needs special kind of employees, of the islamo-fachists type, to help him with his agenda of making Sweden into a Muslim country.
07:55 May 7, 2010 by gplusa
If some of the larger countries with the resources and capability to turn some of those problem nations around bothered to take any action before now, then maybe Sweden wouldn't have to pick up their share and everyone else's share of the people in need. Blaming the ambulance for being overcrowded isn't the solution.
08:07 May 7, 2010 by hilt_m
sounds like a pay-rise in disguise to me, who here really thinks any of that extra money will filter down to the people who actually need it? like many things in Sweden it's another case of a department being way too bureaucracy heavy. I think the formula is this; take one standard bureaucratic job, departmentalize it into 4 jobs, make sure that all 4 positions are totally reliant on each other but that each actual person is unable to perform the duties any other. now make sure that one person goes on holiday, and one takes parental leave, replace one of these with 2 extra untrained staff and don't replace the other at all. Now stir in some extra work load and stand back and watch the magic of nothing happening. that is pretty much how i think it works.
08:07 May 7, 2010 by bolababu
seriously some people on this forum are so blinded by the trash they want to say that they didn't bother to read the article, they just reacted to the title.

pulling from the article, sweden is not going to accept this refugees, they come here to seek asylum and as pointed out, they will not get it as asylum is not granted based on the quality of life but for reasons of persecution.

secondly, they are not from africa or the middle-east, they are from frigging europe!

besides Somalians who be the way claim to be arabs, majority of africans here come here as students or migrated properly so stop letting your hate blind you, frigging idiots!!
10:44 May 7, 2010 by Baned
@bolababu Are we all reading the same article?

"The agency now expects that the government will inject extra money as required. If the Migration Board does not receive additional resources, the likely consequence would be longer processing times and increased caseloads. This would result in longer stays for asylum seekers in Sweden, which would mean a substantially increased burden on the government's budget, according to the estimates.

Double check before you call everyone else an idiot.

Sweden will end up just like England. All the swedes that can afford to leave Sweden will, just like many of the English are doing. England is not England any more. Now they have their first Muslim MP. One reason is so nice to live Sweden in is that there are only 9 million people, just imagine what it will be like with 64 million as in England.
16:26 May 7, 2010 by Swedesmith
I can certainly empathize with any person who, living in an impoverished country, would seek a better life for themselves and their children. However, I believe that any nation has the right and the duty to protect the lives of its citizens. That should be first and foremost. If accepting more asylum seekers into the country threatens an already strained economy one must wonder why would a country's leaders do this???
16:58 May 7, 2010 by Re-Horakhyt...the second coming
Who are the crack heads that leave these xenophobic comments....Update....Native swedes hate living here,,,,,are not having children....and Sweden has some of the worst weather in the WOOOORLD......Sweden needs to stop with the delusional self praise and promotion and do everything it can to sucker people into living here,,,,,,

Interesting figures. I did some research myself about the number of asylum seekers and how many asylum applications each country would have had if they had been as popular as Sweden.

It's for the last three years.

for ex:

France: 580 128 asylum seekers instead of the actual number 106 770

UK: 553 380 instead of 89 460

Germany: 750 228 instead of 68 900!

and so on....

Okay, let's try to make everyone happy. We REQUIRE that all asylum seekers accepted into Sweden be homosexuals. How does this make everyone happy?

1) Homosexuals are not looked upon favorably in most of the world. So this would make the bleeding hearts happy as Sweden made sure these people were not oppressed anymore.

2) Take in homosexuals who are young -- so they can be put to work immediately and pay into the system. Makes the Moderates happy.

3) Few of the homosexuals would be expected to reproduce so any population increase would be temporary. Makes the Greens happy as the population stays low and the Swedish Democrats happy since these non-Swedes would not overtake Swedes genetically.
21:43 May 7, 2010 by silly t
i pity these prospective asylum seekers.when they would come here and face the racism of svenska...they will curse the day they came to this earth.

I wonder about Swedish citizen unemployed people or people without good housing how they should feel about their government bringing in more people who will compete for those resources?

I wonder about Swedish taxpayers with the highest rates in the world how they should feel about paying even more to support these people ?

I wonder what their great great grandchildren will say about the country they created. Will women still be free and equal? Will Sweden still make and produce high quality products to help the world? Will the average standard of living still be one of the highest in the world?
18:16 May 8, 2010 by magudbe
Greg in Canada , why dont u move to Sweden, I assume that u r a white Canadian by your suggestion "Why are the Swedes so hell bent on dramatically changing the ethnic/racial composition of their formerly peaceful homogeneous society?".

@bolababu .. I think you are an idiot for suggesting that other Africans unlike Somalis come to Sweden to study or thr' legal means. I gather that u were privy to all Aslyum seeker's applications! I bet you claimed to be a Somali in your asylum application.
18:29 May 8, 2010 by here for the summer
@bolababu

i did read the article and reread it. The article said they have increased the number of people they let in based upon the increase in applicants from Eastern Europe but that they won't let them stay. So Sweden immigration is saying they will discrimnate against asylam seekers from europe and will let in more people from Africa and the middle east because they hae so many applicants from europe they will reject.

This large a percentage of immigrants will raise the tax burden, raise the unemployment rate and to the extent they are from a very different culture change the culture of the country.
21:20 May 8, 2010 by Jannik
@Greg

"The math just doesn't make sense. How can Sweden continue to bring in this many refugees and not expect serious societal consequences. Why are the Swedes so hell bent on dramatically changing the ethnic/racial composition of their formerly peaceful homogeneous society? "

Because swedes have been brainwashed with PC and multiculturalism, and taught that their culture and country are worthless, and that they should be happy that muslims and africans are here to invade and colonize their country.

Sweden must be one of the most PC countries i have ever lived in, and GB is pretty bad in this regard.

Some parts of Malmo look like the Gaza strip, completely devoid of swedish people and culture.

Do the present day swedes really want their descendents to inherit a rotten multicultural shithole?

It seems like swedes are either living in fantasy land, or so guiltridden that they wish for their own countries destruction.

Only a totalitarian transformation of the swedish mind can explain this selfdestructive and maladaptive course they presently have chosen.

Time to wake up mr. and mrs Svensson!

please somebody stop this

this is an scandal we are entering the country 20000 30000 people every year only refugees im not counting those who come like tourist and stay anyway

we are feeding all these lazy so called persecuted who come here on eternal holydays to suck all they can

and for better they spend their whole time looking for white girls to seduce (or mans)allthat with the money of the stupid swedes.ive seen them in the bars in slussen at nights they look desperate to show how special they are (and there is some times stupid people who believes)for them the goal is to pick a swedish native marry and that they teach each other all the technics to do so just like in their countries they teach each other how to fool the inmigrations officials
19:03 May 13, 2010 by Traveler2010
I am going to have to go ahead and agree with this. It's crazy. It's somewhat analogous to in America when our government turns the other way and lets a zillion Mexicans run across the border every day. Protect your own country people!

@Globalnomad

Thus becoming an immigrant yourself? Hypocrite

@Swedesmith - "protect the lives of its citizens".

You make the assumption that every asylum seeker here will bomb your family.

I am an immigrant in another country and honestly I have no idea what the immigration authorities in Sweden are thinking.

Here is the weird thing. Every time I criticize the immigration policy of Sweden and the possible damage of having so many unskilled immigrants to the society, I get a good half an hour humanity lecture from my sarbo. Go figure..
