Women risk having considerably lower pensions than men. The reason, according to a study by the alliance of insurance companies, Länsförsäkringar is quite simple: they're not saving enough.

Men on average put aside 13,400 kronor towards their pension per annum compared to just 7,200 kronor saved by women, according to Länsförsäkringar.

Although more women save money than men, women save considerably less. The study, based on 7,800 people between the ages of 16 and 69, showed that 16% of men and 25% of women save less than 3,000 kronor a year.

Of those who save at least 12,000 kronor a year, 21% are men whilst only 9% are women.

Länsförsäkringar's spokesperson Eva Adolphson says "percentage-wise there is a greater difference in the amount men and women save compared to the difference in their wages. It's important that even if you are living together you both save the same amount."

It's unclear, according to Länsförsäkringar, just why women are saving less towards their pension than men.
