A young man was seriously injured on Saturday night after jumping from the fourth-floor balcony of an apartment in Uddevalla in south-west Sweden as he attempted to avoid arrest.

Police called to the apartment to apprehend the man on suspicion of having issued threats to his ex-girlfriend.

"When he understood that he was about to be arrested by the police he jumped," said police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg.

The man was taken to hospital where his condition was described on Sunday morning as serious but stable.
