The trains, which depart twice an hour, transport thousands of commuters between the two cities on a daily basis, reports Dagens Nyheter (DN), which was first to break the story.
SJ is one of several companies operating commuter traffic in the region.
The blue-and-grey SL commuter trains, which are run by Stockholm’s regional transport company, won’t be affected by the move, nor will commuter trains operated by Mälartåg.
Amid growing competition, keeping the trains between Uppsala and Stockholm running costs SJ over 50 million kronor a year in losses, according to CEO Monica Lingegård.
She said it would be irresponsible to continue to provide life support to the Stockholm-Uppsala trains when there are also record investments in new trains and routes to be paid.
“We can’t make it work. And it’s not possible to allow it to cost so much money. It’s my responsibility then to discontinue [the commuter trains],” she told DN.
The trains will run until December 15th. SJ’s standard northbound regional trains will continue to call at Uppsala after that date, but not as often as the commuter trains.
The decision comes just a week after SJ announced that it would be scrapping its sleeper trains between Gothenburg and Umeå as well as between Gothenburg and Jämtland.
