How much are prices going to rise?
All adult tickets are set to go up in price from January 8th, while tickets for discounted groups (like students, pensioners and under-20s) will remain the same.
This means that adults will have to pay extra on all tickets, whether that’s a travel pass or single ticket.
Here’s a breakdown of the new prices, with the old price in brackets.
- Single ticket for 75 minutes: 43 kronor (up from 42)
- Yearly ticket for 365 days: 11,130 kronor (10,710)
- 90 day ticket: 3,070 kronor (2,960)
- 30 day ticket: 1,060 kronor (1,020)
- 7 day ticket: 470 kronor (455)
- 72 hour ticket: 360 kronor (350)
- 24 hour ticket: 180 kronor (175)
How can I save money?
SL lets you buy tickets, including travel passes, in advance and save them to your account, so you can stock up on tickets at the old price and use them after prices go up on January 8th.
However, there’s a catch. SL only lets you save unused tickets which do not have a specific date of activation to your account for 60 days, so you should only buy tickets you’re going to activate within that period.
Let’s say you usually buy monthly tickets, and you currently have an active ticket which is due to run out at some point in January after the 8th and you are planning on renewing it in both January and February.
If you buy two monthly tickets today, you can activate one in January when your current ticket runs out and one 30 days later in February – well within the 60 day period in which you need to activate them.
By doing this, instead of buying two 30-day tickets after January 8th, you would save 80 kronor. That might not sound like a lot, but if you’re planning on buying or renewing a yearly ticket before March 7th (60 days after January 7th), you could save as much as 420 kronor by buying your ticket today and activating it within 60 days’ time.
How do I do it?
Essentially, all you have to do is buy your ticket as usual through SL’s app, just make sure not to activate it before you need to use it. Once you’re ready to use it, just go back into the app, find the ticket you already bought at the old price, activate it, and you’re good to go.
What about UL/SL tickets?
When The Local spoke to SL on Tuesday, a customer service agent confirmed that any UL/SL tickets bought before January 8th can be used after that date at the old price.
Be aware, however, that UL/SL tickets work slightly differently. It’s not possible to buy all types of UL/SL tickets in the app, so if you want a period ticket, you may need to buy a physical ticket at a ticket kiosk, supermarket or other seller of UL/SL tickets instead. You’ll also need to add a specific date of activation at the time of purchase.
