The call for the two million kronor grant will be open from April 15th until December 1st 2025, according to a press statement from the Swedish Research Council.
Research organisations or Swedish higher education institutions will be eligible to apply for the funding, which is meant to cover expenses for recruitment, housing, travel, accompanying family members and the researcher’s initial salary.
“With this call, we want to make it easier for higher education institutions and other research organisations in Sweden to recruit prominent research talents who are working outside Europe,” said Katarina Bjelke, director general of the Swedish Research Council, in a statement.
“We hope that the researchers will establish themselves here and remain after the initial grant period,” she added.
Sweden’s Migration Agency awarded 1,451 residence permits to international researchers in 2024, up from 1,325 in 2023 (not including permits after appeals).
The Swedish government’s stated aim is to make Sweden a more attractive destination for foreign researchers, including by making it easier for them to travel while in-between residence permits and speeding up the process for permanent residency.
