King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark will meet King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden on the Öresund Bridge on July 1st this year to celebrate the completion and opening of the bridge in 2000.
“It is a pride and honour for us to bid the royal couples of Denmark and Sweden welcome to the anniversary celebrations of the Öresund Bridge,” CEO of bridge operator Øresundsbron Linus Eriksson said in a press statement.
“We look forward to celebrating this milestone and looking back at the years in which our countries have been joined,” he said.
The Öresund Bridge opened in 2000 and is now used daily by thousands of travellers and commuters.
Consisting of a bridge, a tunnel and the artificial island Peberholm, the connection has a total length of 15.9 kilometres.
The royals from the two countries are set to meet on the Swedish side of the bridge on July 1st, before driving in convoy across the connection, stopping at Peberholm in the middle of the Öresund Strait.
The event recalls the inauguration of the bridge on July 1st, 2000, when the then-regents of both countries also met on Peberholm. In August 1999, when the final part of the structure was completed, the then-Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria met on the suspension bridge.
The Öresund Bridge connection is a vital element of growing regional ties between Denmark and Sweden and particularly the Copenhagen and Skåne regions.
