"Stockholm has the highest house prices in the country. But at the same time, Stockholm is also the place where the price difference compared to commuter municipalities is greatest," researchers from the property website Hemnet wrote in a press release.
They maybe should have qualified that, as the monied municipalities of Danderyd, Lidingö, Täby, Sundbyberg and Nacka are even pricier on average than Stockholm city itself.
But if you can put up with an hour's commute on the train from Nynäshamn into Stockholm and back every day you can snap up a detached house for only 4.15 million kronor ‒ less than half the 8.62 million average for a house in Stockholm city.
Upplands-Bro, which also boasts excellent connections to Arlanda and Uppsala, offers the second biggest savings, with the average house there going for 4.38 million kronor.
Salem, on the outskirts of Södertälje, comes next at 4.42 million kronor, although Södertälje itself was not included in the analysis. It is followed by Botkyrka (4.52 million) and Haninge (4.73 million).
