An orange warning, the second on Sweden's three-point scale, was issued for large parts of Västra Götaland county and northern Halland early on Wednesday, expiring shortly before lunchtime. A yellow weather warning is still in place in the area until 10am on January 8th.
"Some parts of western Sweden have probably seen more than 20 centimetres of snow overnight," SMHI meteorologist Catharina Wahlström told the TT newswire, adding that another 15 centimetres of snow could fall in the same area on Wednesday.
Another orange warning is still in place in part of southern Norrland, including Hudiksvall and Sundsvall, which the agency warns could see between 25 and 40 centimetres of snow. That warning is in place from noon on Wednesday until 11pm.
Public transport affected
In Gothenburg, public transport is heavily affected by the snowfall.
"The snow is causing issues on public transport, primarily in the Gothenburg region," Kristian Lans, press spokesperson from local traffic company Västtrafik told the TT newswire. "There are a lot of cancellations and the services which are running are doing so with major delays."
There have also been a number of accidents on Wednesday morning.
"If you can, you should avoid heading out on the roads," police press spokesperson Thomas Fuxborg, from the Western police region, told TT.
Gothenburg city council has held an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday to discuss how the snow could affect the municipality, for example issues with commuters trying to get to and from work.
"All public transport is more or less cancelled," Gothenburg City Council head of safety, Filip Lundgren, told local newspaper Göteborgs-Posten (GP).
Trains in Norrland cancelled
There is also a yellow weather warning in place for Dalarna and southeastern Norrland until 4pm on Wednesday, and services between Sundsvall and Gävle have been reduced.
Norrtåg has cancelled trains between Kiruna and Luleå due to the cold, and there are a few hundred households in Gävleborg still without power since December 27th, when the region was hit by Storm Johannes.
