Expats in Sweden face fresh new challenges every day – from learning the language to figuring out where to buy postage stamps. And so it’s understandable that finances often take a back seat as you adapt to daily life.

Sweden’s unique savings and investment system can be hard to navigate. And with most Swedish banks now operating through apps and chatbots, you may miss out on personal advice that could improve your financial planning and negatively impact your long-term savings.

Mangold Private Banking takes a more traditional approach. They get to know their clients on an individual basis and are often available to meet on the same day. By keeping the barriers to entry for private banking relatively low, they aim to ensure that as many people as possible benefit not just from expert advice but also gain access to a broad range of asset portfolios not traditionally available to most people.

A smarter way to invest

You may have come across an Investeringssparkonto, or ISK. It’s a tax-efficient Swedish investment account with no capital gains tax and a flat annual tax of 1.065% (in 2026). The first 300,000 SEK is also tax-free.

But here’s what most expats don’t realise. It’s possible to employ discretionary investment management within an ISK, meaning investments are managed on your behalf by a professional investment firm. This can make your ISK a stronger investment account by spreading your money across different types of investments – like bonds, stocks, and assets that don’t move with the stock market.

You can diversify by investing in a mix of mutual funds, which are easy to access on most investment platforms. However, they often diversify across too many assets, hold extra cash, and lack transparency.

With discretionary investing, you own the assets directly, focus on stronger investments, and get a clearer view of where your money is. It’s also tailored to your goals and risk level, which can lead to better long-term returns.

Mangold offers discretionary investment management to all private banking clients with 500,000 SEK (€46,168) and up. An in-depth interview helps the team to understand your needs and wants. From there, a tailored mix of portfolios and various assets is matched to your individual goals.

From ISKs to bonds, understanding Sweden’s investment options can help you build a stronger financial future.

Sweden’s unique bond advantage

Building a stable base in your portfolio is important for managing risk. Bonds are often used for this because they typically offer more predictable returns than stocks.

Put simply, a bond is a loan to a company. In return, the company pays you interest over time. The downside is that inflation can reduce the value of those returns. However, the Swedish bond market has its own unique characteristics – many corporate bonds combine fixed and variable interest rates, which can help protect against inflation.

The problem is that bonds aren’t always easy to access. Most people invest through mutual funds, which can come with lower returns and less transparency. The alternative is that they need very large sums (in the region of tens of millions of kronor) to build a bond portfolio directly.

Mangold’s solution is to make this more accessible. Their Aktiv Ränta portfolios allow investors with around one million SEK (€92,286) to own bonds directly by splitting them into smaller parts. These portfolios are actively managed, keep a focused selection of bonds, and have historically delivered stronger returns than comparable mutual funds.
