Four municipalities are set to raise their municipal tax rate in 2025, according to figures by number crunchers Statistics Sweden: Övertorneå (up by 0.75 kronor per 100 kronor), Laxå (0.52 kronor), Vilhelmina (0.25 kronor) and Stockholm (0.24 kronor).
Thirteen municipalities are instead lowering their tax rate, with Vara in western Sweden making the sharpest cut, by 0.60 kronor. It’s followed by Ale and Lidingö (-0.50 kronor).
All but two regions are keeping their regional tax rate unchanged: Värmland and Dalarna, who are raising their tax rate by 0.60 kronor and 0.35 kronor, respectively.
This means residents of 35 municipalities will get a higher total local tax rate (municipal plus regional) in 2025. Scroll down to find your own tax rate in the table below.
EXPLAINED:
In Sweden, your local tax rate consists of two parts: the tax you pay to the municipality (kommun) where you live and the region (region, previously landsting).
So if you for example live in Skellefteå, your local taxes go to Skellefteå municipality and are used to fund, for example, schools and elderly care – and Region Västerbotten, which is responsible for among other things healthcare.
State tax is only paid on annual income over a certain amount – this will be 625,800 kronor in 2025, but with the help of various deductions you can earn a fair bit more without having to pay state tax. This article only looks at the total local tax rate.
