Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper that Sweden will not take in as many asylum seekers from Afghanistan as it did during the war in Syria.
Sweden is one of several European countries to announce it will stop sending development aid to Afghanistan for now, after the Taliban swept back into power in the country.
Sweden’s key embassy staff has evacuated Afghanistan, but Swedish citizens and local employees remain in the country, Sweden’s foreign minister said on Monday.
Sweden is halting all deportations to Afghanistan, stopping the expulsion of some 7,000 people, over the deteriorating security situation in the country.
